World Championships

ONE FOR ALL, ALL FOR ONE …

Probably the biggest coup for Ina-Maria Schmid and Christian Cesar (Board of the European Nail Association) was bringing the first official World Championship to Velden am Wörthersee in 2004. It succeeded in raising the nail design industry to a very high level.

The second World Championship, which followed a year later, was staged in the Villach Congress Center. 55 competitors and their models from 20 nations along with their accredited World Championship teams gathered in beautiful Carinthia and put their skills to the test before a 14-member international jury.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP CRITERIA

Ina-Maria Schmid has been personally involved since 1996 in overseeing the introduction of strictly consistent evaluation criteria at nail design competitions.

Indeed, the evaluation form used at all European Championships was designed by her. It was these measures that made the competitions by and WK International and Health and Beauty possible.

ASSESSMENT SYSTEM

The World Championships employs a newly developed assessment system that puts an end of all the accusations of distortion and manipulation that were continually voiced at previous events, and ensures a fair process.

The system, which is protected by copyright, has five-stages. In stage 1 the participants initially rate each other  and are then judged by the panel of experts present at the competition.

The third stage comprises a review by a number of jurors located on different continents, who are sent via the internet 3-D scans of the nails to be judged. This is possible thanks to a special 3-D imaging technology that measures the nail with millimetre accuracy during the scan and displays it in a three-dimensional format.

Special software was developed for stage 4, which is able to carry out an evaluation fully automatically at the press of a button. This ensures that the assessments are 100% accurate.

In stage 5, all the nail studios throughout the world can influence the final decision by taking part in a ballot and voting for their favourite.

ECHO

This motto is reflected in the revolutionary new ideas described above for the assessment system and is also evidenced by international success. Over 400,000 hits on the World Championship site and participation in the ballot confirm the worldwide interest.

IT HAS TO BE SAID

Unfortunately, there exist in the nail industry a number of self-proclaimed world champions. These are being sued as a matter of urgency for EUR 60,000 for trademark infringement. The fact is that only Tom Holcomb (winner of the 2004 World Championship in Velden), Alisha Rimando (winner of the 2005 World Championship in Villach) and Emese Koppanyi  (winner of the 2010 World Championship in Monaco) are allowed to refer to themselves as world champions.

For further information, USA has what are known as „Top 25 Of World“ competitions, which select a winner based on a points system. Every year in June the winner of the „Top 25 Of World“ is chosen in Las Vegas, BUT not the world champion!
